Back at Ordak's camp, Valrin stared at Evurn.
âShould we have let her go?â Valrin asked.
âKirla?â Evurn asked.
âOf course Kirla.â
âHmph, the girl will get herself killed.â
âNot likely,â Ordak said. âShe seems formidable. She might end up doing quite well in Silir.â
Evurn sighed and stood. âWell, neither the Ranger nor the rogue are our concern at the moment. We need to work to get north, seek out these Verit Gamblers. Is it dark enough, old friend?â
âIt is. I have already sent Stonehide to get his friends.â
âHis friends?â Braei asked.
âHis friends!â Ordak responded.
The half-orc took them down the mountain path to an area of flat ground several paces from the dried-out riverbed. At that time, several of the reptilian creatures emerged from the ground, shaking off the heavy dirt.
âThey are tunnelers,â Ordak said. âThough, we can't ride them when they are tunneling. They hide from most foes like that so that they donât actually have to fight.â
âCan they?â Evri asked.
âThey can. Their bite is poisonous, and their tails have quite a bit of force. But they try to avoid confrontation. A wise decision.â
âDo they pull something?â Braei asked.
âNope, you just climb on and hold on. It's quite easy!â
Ordak jumped on Stonehide as Evri jumped on another one.
âThese have all been ridden at some time, but Stonehide is the smartest. Come now, donât be shy,â he said, motioning to them. âItâs a hard ride north, and you do not want to walk that path!â
They each mounted, leaving Braei to be the last one. Valrin gripped the creature behind the neck, and Braei glanced at him.
âI much prefer a vessel at sea in precarious waters,â she said to him.
"Soon enough, Braei, soon enough.â
She slowly climbed onto the back of the nearest lizard, and as she was seated and settled, it turned its head and licked her with a slender forked tongue.
âOh, gosh, Valrin!â
âAh! He likes the way you taste!â Ordak laughed, âCome now, follow!â
Valrin didn't have to do anything but hold on. As Ordak and Stonehide took the lead, the other lizards followed behind. Braei had a death grip on her lizard, but Evri and Evurn seemed fairly calm. As they moved across the dry riverbed and began down an old stone road that led beside the mountains, he looked behind at the mountains and the home of the Delkian beyond. Little did he know that that place was the only peaceful place to be found on all the island of Aieclo.
